A rapidly growing market
Market trends
The global market for prebiotic ingredients is experiencing dynamic and sustained growth, reflecting a growing consumer interest in digestive and overall health. According to a recent study by Mordor Intelligence1, this market was valued at $8.09 billion in 2023, with an expected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 8% over the coming years. This rapid growth is largely driven by the search for natural, effective, and easy-to-integrate solutions, especially in the functional nutrition, dietary supplements, and beverages sectors.
Concerns for better gut health
Gut health is now at the forefront of consumer concerns. In Europe, 56% of consumers associate prebiotics with immune system support, which is unsurprising since 70% of immune cells are located in the gut. This correlation between the microbiome and immunity is driving increased demand for ingredients that promote a healthy microbiome.
Furthermore, the focus on digestion translates into a strong preference for foods rich in prebiotic fibers. For example, the bakery and cereal products market is seeing a high demand for these beneficial ingredients. This trend is reinforced by a general rise in awareness of the importance of a balanced diet, which directly stimulates the growth of ingredients targeting digestive health.
The International Food Information Council highlights that more than a quarter of adults (28%) consider digestive health a key benefit sought in food and beverage products. Even more significantly, among consumers over 50 years old, about two-thirds view digestive health as an extremely or very important factor, creating a real growth lever for the prebiotic ingredient market.
According to a study by FMCG Gurus, 49% of consumers were aware of the microbiome in 2024, compared to just 15% in 2022. More than half of those who are aware of the microbiome have made changes to their diet as a result. Specifically, 54% have consumed prebiotic-enriched foods or supplements, 52% have increased their intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, and 46% have consumed more fiber-rich foods. These positive perceptions are driving growing demand for prebiotic ingredients across various food and beverage applications.
