Supporting resilient territories, healthy soils and economic impact
How can a natural ingredient value chain contribute to restoring degraded land while creating lasting opportunities for local communities?
At Nexira, we believe that responsible sourcing starts at origin. For almost 50 years, we have been working closely with local communities across the Sahel to develop sustainable natural ingredient value chains.
Since 2009, this commitment has taken shape through the Acacia Program, developed with NGO A Better Life by SOS SAHEL in Chad, combining environmental restoration, economic development and community empowerment.
Restoring land, supporting livelihoods
Acacia trees play an essential role in the Sahel. By helping restore soil fertility, combat erosion and support biodiversity, they contribute to more resilient ecosystems while providing a valuable natural resource for local communities.
Through the Acacia Program, these environmental benefits are connected to tangible socio-economic progress.
The results of the first two phases (2009–2021) demonstrate the impact of this approach:
- Over 2.15 million trees planted across 10,900 hectares
- 180,000 ha under sustainable land management
- 28,000 producers trained in best harvesting practices
- 70% increase in acacia gum production
- 30% increase in women’s participation in decision-making bodies
These achievements demonstrate how a sustainable acacia gum value chain can support both ecosystem restoration and local economic resilience.
Looking ahead: new ambitions for 2036
The third phase of the Acacia Program (2026–2036) sets new environmental and socio-economic objectives, including restoring more than 300,000 hectares of land, doubling acacia gum production and extending the program to 300 villages and 50,000 producers.
By connecting local harvesting practices with global markets, Nexira aims to contribute to a stronger, more sustainable value chain that benefits both people and the planet.
